Yes, they are paper airplanes! Which technically, could be considered a kind of wood. Or rather, scale models made using the medium of paper and cardstock, which resembles using sheet metal panels in miniature. We found that spray painting the paper turns it into a kind of water-resistant composite, (or adding epoxy in the larger planes ) that is both resilient and light weight, as well as beautiful. And low cost. And easily reproducible! Even resizable. Glue soaked card can stiffen up like wood, and It's easy and quick to press panel lines into paper skins (cues are on the pieces), as well as rivets, access panels, and other details. Many of the panel lines are created as a simple result of the build, many of those are either true to scale, or close enough to look it. And some times the imperfections of the paper mimic the old sheet metal look in ways that nothing else we know of can. Seeing a well built Paper Air Force model from a few feet away really makes you want to get in and take a closer look!
Every kit comes with part sheets, peel-n-stick satin decals with 4 different schemes to build, a decal reference sheet, a buildable working prop (deadstick and cruzer lines only) , and 3 packed full books of instructions. At Paper Air Force, you get two volumes of picture book instructions and one book written - usually only needed if you get stuck and want additional clarity. Must be due to some model once built and couldn't be certain to glue or not to glue! Might make things look complicated, but the concept is really very simple once grasped: just wrap the skins around the "bulks" (formers) and create sections. Stick the sections together and your airplane is "magically" formed! Then add a few braces on the inside. The wing and stabs need no additional covering, and you don't need to build on plans. In fact, the wing is the plan! Build right on it, and close it up. See our contruction page for more pics of the process. What's not included is anything that can't be made of paper - such as rubber, prop shafts, music wire, etc, though the "Cruzer" and "Deadstick" lines do include a buildable working propeller.
While P.A.F. kits are not die or laser cut, it's easy enough to cut out the pieces with scissors and it keeps the cost very low! Plus, it allows you to reproduce another kit for yourself accurately, making the cost even lower. Some time watching videos and cutting parts makes it go quick, or sometimes cut the next pieces while waiting a minute for others to dry. And, if you are weary of stinky toxic glues that are overpriced, go bad before you get a chance to use them, or stick your fingers together, these kits can built using mostly, or entirely, cheap, washable non toxic white glues that never go bad! Designs include sliding canopies, removeable tops, detachable wings (all sizes), removeable retractable gear for display, (templates for paper wheels are included but not rubber or foam gear) - all made of paper or card!
We know, all the kids wanna do is something to do with a screen these days. Give 'em a Paper Air Force kit!. Science, Technology, Engineering, and...what was that fourth thing? Maybe watching you build up an awesome toy out of a sheaf of paper and bottle of glue will spark something somewhere that will get them a good job someday.
